• "The Point"

Te Whau Vineyard 2000 "The Point"

• The Season:
Good flowering, followed by excellent fruit set across all varietals marked the beginning of an outstanding season on Waiheke Island. A warm mid-summer, with the right amount of rain followed by a hot, dry finish up to vintage time ensured a good crop of perfectly ripened, balanced, healthy fruit. We picked the last of our grapes from
slightly stressed vines just before the rains.

• Varietal Composition by Yield:
  Cabernet Sauvignon 58%
  Merlot 21%
  Cabernet Franc 18%
  Malbec 3%

The fruit was hand harvested in March 2000, and was processed by gravity-feed at the estate winery.

• Harvest Analysis:
  22.7° - 23.4° Brix
  3.38 - 3.52 pH
  5.3 - 7.7g/l TA

Winemaking:
A minimal tartaric acid addition was carried out pre-fermentation, then inoculation with yeast. Fermentation was in small stainless steel tanks with each varietal being fermented separately averaging 27°C to 32°C, with pump-over's four times daily, and no cap plunging. Post-fermentation maceration was for five to seven days before pressing in a small basket press.

Elevage was for 15 months in a range of top-quality Centre of France oak from fourteen leading coopers, in a 30:70 new:one year year wood ratio. The finished wine was bottled at Goldwaters in July 2001, with no fining and a light filtration. Alcohol 13.6% by volume. 650 cases made.
